When we needed it most, maternal nutrition built to global standards simply did not exist in India — let alone a company willing to show you exactly what was in the pack and why. So we decided to build it ourselves.
We started Nooma at our kitchen table, between feeds, with a list of everything we couldn't find in India.
It wasn't a market gap on a slide deck. It was a cupboard with nothing in it we felt good about. Here's how we got from there to here — the honest version.
When I moved back to India for my second pregnancy, I couldn't find a single nutrition product I trusted. The prenatal supplements and infant formula were decades behind. And after delivery, there was nothing I could trust.
Ruchi was building engineering teams. Aalap was deep in food supply chains. Neither of us planned to start a nutrition company — we just kept ending up in the same conversation about what mothers in India are actually handed.
We had moved back to India for the pregnancy. Standing in a pharmacy aisle a few weeks before the due date, we realised the prenatal options were decades behind what Ruchi had relied on abroad — and that after delivery, there was essentially nothing at all.
"Surely someone makes this?" — nobody did.
No clean prenatal protein built for pregnancy. No postnatal system at all. The choice was legacy brands or a suitcase from abroad. That was the moment this stopped being a conversation and became a company.
R&D partner locked for both the prenatal and infant formulations. FSSAI filing in. BIS process running. Dozens of sample batches, most of which we rejected. None of this photographs well — all of it has to be finished before anything reaches a mother.
A clear, juice-like sachet instead of a chalky scoop — 5g whey isolate with algal DHA, active folate, choline and D3. Vegetarian. Every dose printed on the pack. Going out through gynaecologists and straight to mothers, starting with our founding 500.
Infant Stage 1 follows FSSAI approval — 100% lactose, whole A2, no palm oil, no maltodextrin, no soy, built to EU/GFSI standards. Lactation and postnatal nutrition for the fourth trimester lands in Q3 2027. After that: toddler nutrition, drops, weaning foods.
Every founding member shapes what we make next — the flavours, the formats, the things we haven't thought of yet.
Timeline reflects our current build and launch roadmap; dates may shift as regulatory approvals and testing complete.
Formulated with our R&D partner against peer-reviewed evidence and ICMR-NIN requirements, with FSSAI and BIS processes underway. Every dose disclosed — no proprietary blends.
We were parents before we were founders. Everything is tested against one question: would we give this to our own child? If not, it doesn't ship.
Vegetarian by design — algal DHA, no palm oil, no maltodextrin, no soy. Caring for the next generation and caring for the planet are the same job.
Breastfeeding is the best possible start for a baby, and nothing we make is meant to replace it. We'd rather help you keep going — which is why our work begins with the mother. A well-nourished mother feeds better, recovers better, and has more left over for the hardest months of her life.
Everything we launch with is maternal nutrition: for you, during pregnancy and recovery. Anything we ever make for a baby will reach you only through your doctor, on their advice — never through an ad, a sample, or a nudge from us.
Mother's milk is best for your baby. Infant milk substitutes and infant foods should be used only on the advice of a healthcare professional.
